Best practice
Writing better hooks
A hook isn't a clever line — it's a promise. The viewer should know in 3 seconds what they'll get if they keep watching.
The 3-second test
Mute the video and watch the first 3 seconds. If you can't tell what the post is about from the on-screen text alone, the hook is too weak.
Patterns that work
- Specific number: "3 things I stopped buying when I started budgeting."
- Contrarian POV: "Stop doing 10-step skincare. Do this instead."
- Stakes + time: "I lost $2K in 3 months. Here's what I'd do differently."
Avoid
- Greetings ("Hey guys!") — wasted seconds.
- Vague promises ("This will change your life") with no specifics.
- Reading the title — show it on screen instead.
